Middle-class consumers are grappling with tightened budgets as the price of chicken meat continues to rise in Lake Market and Gariahat market, hovering between Tk 270-280 per kilogram for cut chicken and Tk 170-180 for whole chicken. Traders attribute the sudden spike in prices to a decrease in chicken supply from poultry farms, exacerbated by weather conditions leading to chicken fatalities. Dilip Mondal, Secretary of Gariahat Bazar Samiti, highlighted the impact of fluctuating weather patterns, indicating that hot days and cold nights are contributing to reduced chicken supply.
While Madanmohan Maiti, General Secretary of the 'West Bengal Poultry Association,' refutes claims of chicken mortality, he acknowledges the upward pressure on prices due to increased costs associated with poultry farming. Maiti attributes the price surge to rising maize prices, the primary feed for chickens, which have escalated from Tk 20 to Tk 25-26 per kilogram. Despite increased maize cultivation in the state, dependence on external maize sources due to inadequate supply exacerbates the cost burden, ultimately impacting chicken prices.
